MAHALE'S MEMORIES LINGER ON: Renowned educationist, French Scholar and former Vice-Chancellor of Manipur University, Dr Kashinath J Mahale, 79, of Chorao, was a soft-spoken gentleman. The news of his sad demise following a brief illness at the GMC on February 4 cause a pall of gloom among his many friends and admirers. Dr Mahale was suffering from a viral infection ‘Gillian Barys’, which affects the nerves. Born on 3 May 1924 at Chorao, Mahale rose to great heights from a humble beginning. He was MA in French, LLB and twice PhD in French Literature and Public International Law from Sorbonne, Paris University. He was a fellow in French at Wilson College, Bombay, in 1949 and ended as a Vice-Chancellor of Manipur University after having occupied key teaching positions in several premier educational institutions. He was awarded many a scholarships by Indian and French government and also awarded the knighthood “Chevalier de l’orde des Palmes Academiques” by the Ministry of Education, Government of France, in 1984.

KONKANI LITERARY FIGURE PASSES AWAY: Fr Antonio Pereira, SJ, a prolific Konkani writer, orator and educationist, breathed his last on February 25 at GMC hospital, Bambolim, after a brief illness. He was 84. Fr Pereira was residing with the Jesuit community at St Britto’s, Mapusa, since the last 8 years following a paralytic stroke. Born on August 25, 1919, in Sirlim, he was ordained priest by the then Archbishop of Kolkata, Ferdinand Pereira, on November 21, 1952. Fr Pereira worked as a parish priest in Bicholim for over a decade and earned praise and admiration among all there by virtue of his attitude to bring together people of both faiths--Hindu and Catholic. Thereafter he was the Director of the Baga Retreat House for 14 years. And finally he was posted at Xavier Centre for Historical Research, Porvorim. The mortal remains of Rev Fr Antonio Pereira were laid to rest at the Bicholim cemetery on February 26, with a large number of people from all walks of life participating in the funeral procession. Among many who expressed grief of Fr Pereira demise figured the Chairman of Kala Academy, Pratapsingh Rane, who highlighted the outstanding contribution of Fr Pereira in the field of literature and history of Konkani language.

PROF EDWARD AWARDED PHD: Prof Edward J D’Lima has been awarded the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Goa University for his thesis “Creative and Critical Writings of Armando Menezes”. D’Lima has established Armando Menezes, a Goan professor and poet as one of the contributors to Indian English poetry, in his thesis. He has also analysed his critical writings, essays and nationalistic writings. The research is a pioneering work in the field of Indian English literature and should arouse interest for further research in the writings of this great Goan literateur of the twentieth century. D’Lima completed his MPhil degree in American literature, specializing in modern American drama. Presently, he is the head, Dept of English, at DM’s College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Assagao.

ASHLEY IS GUJ CHIEF: Ashley do Rosario of Herald was elected president of Goa Union of Journalists at the elections held on February 21. He won by a margin of 10 votes, polling 66 votes over his rival Suhasini Prabhugaonkar of Gomantak. The members elected for the 10-member executive committee were Vithaldas Hegde of GT, Ganesh Jawdekar of Navprabha, Kishor Shet Mandrekar of Tarun Bharat, Anand Sambhaji of Gomantak, Joaquim Fernandes of NT, Prakash Shirsagar of Gomantak, Mayuresh Watve of Tarun Bharat, Suresh Vadavadekar of GT, Sudesh Arlekar of Tarun Bharat and Ambaji Kamat of Navprabha. A motion congratulating Pramod Khandeparkar, Sandesh Prabhudesai, Paul Fernandes, Joaquim Fernandes and Leena Pednekar tabled by Suhasini Prabhugaonkar and seconded by Vitahldas Hegde was passed unanimously.

SALATRY AWARDED: The Rashtriya Kalagun Gaurav Pratistan of Vicharjyotr Publications from Pune has awarded the Sahitya Bushan Literary Award to Ms Amita N Salatry for her article published in daily “Gomantak” recently. She had earlier received the national literary award from Kerala.

DISTINGUISHED AWARD 2004: Dr Barad’s yet another achievement is his appointment to Special Task Force Project (STFP) in USA. This appointment comes to him for his outstanding contributions to pharmaceutical profession worldwide and also for his working experience of over 22 plus years. This STFP is constituted with members selected from different disciplines and from five different continents. The main aim of this STFP is to recommend the required changes to USA’s existing Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) regulations. The United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) and USA’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) generally accept the recommendations of STFP. Dr Barad has already started contributing his recommendations to STFP.

Harshvardhan Bhatkuly and Rajeev D’Silva representing SavoirFaire have clinched Goa’s most prestigious corporate quiz—WizBiz. This battle of wits was organised by the Industry Institute Interaction and the Marketing Club, Goa Institute of Management, Ribandar, on February 8. This year WizBiz witnessed 26 corporate houses vying for top honours.

PHD FOR SHARDA: Sharda W Khade was awarded the PhD in Botany at the 16th annual convocation of Goa University held at the Kala Academy recently. Sharda carried out work on “Arbucular mycorrhizal status of Carica papaya in agro-based ecosystem of Goa” for her doctoral thesis. While carrying out her research on doctoral thesis, she also worked on Planning Commission project entitled “Plant and Fungus Biodiversity Inventory Conservation and Utilization effort for Western Ghat Region of Goa State” co-ordinated by Prof DJ Bhat, Dean of Life Sciences and BOD of Botany, Goa University.

NEW DEAN OF GMC: Dr C P Das, a professor linked to the department of ear, nose and throat (ENT) at the Goa Medical College Hospital, has been appointed as the newdean of the premier health institution of the state from March 1. Dr Das replaced Dr V G Dhume, who retired from the post on February 29.

FRIENDLY POSTMAN: Postman Nagoji Shankar Naik , hailing from Arabo in Pernem, had become a household name in picturesque Siolim after serving the people dedicatedly for the past 25 years. On his last day at work his colleagues organised a farewell lunch for him. As a token of gratitude for his years of dedicated service, on 15 February the residents of Gaunsavddo-Siolim presented the affable postman with a bag full of goodies and a souvenir photograph of himself in Gaunsavaddo. KONKANI SINGER SOUZA GUIAO NO MORE: Francisco Xavier Guiso De Souza, popularly known as Souza Guiao, a versatile personality, a singer and sportsman, who captured the hearts of Goans with his melodious and unique style of singing in the 1940s and 150s, expired on January 31 at his residence at Calangute. Born in 1923, Souza Guiao studied in St Joseph’s High School, Arpora, he participated in hundreds of tiatrs as a singer. The excellent yodeler sang in English and Portuguese besides Konkani, a feat no other singer has so far achieved on the Konkani stage. He was the only artiste then to sing in Konkani, Portuguese and English at the then Emissora de Goa, which was broadcasting to all the Portuguese colonies. He was an all-Goa carrom champion and also a superb football player of the football team trained by late Lube Tavares. Even at the age of 81, he was very active and enjoyed walking, cycling and singing his own songs. His funeral took place on February 1.

GOLD MEDAL FOR DR PAI: Dr IK Pai, a faculty member in the department of Zoology, Goa University, has been awarded gold medal and conferred honorary fellowship by Indian Academy of Environmental Science, Hardwar, at the recently concluded national conference in ‘Fish and Their Environment’ organised in association with Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, urangabad.

PARULEKAR WINS REDDICK AWARD: Mr Dattesh Damodar Parulekar, a doctoral fellow at the Centre for Latin American and International Studies, Goa University, has been awarded the Olive I Reddic Award, administered by the Indian Association of American Studies, at its conference held at Udaipur recently. Mr Dattesh had presented a research paper on “US foreign policy in South Asia: Changing priorities and shifting paradigms” at the conference.

GOAN COACH FOR US: Mr Dilip Naik, chief coach of Goa Baseball Association and the Sports Instructor of Vivekanand Vidyalaya, Borim, has been selected to undergo advanced training in baseball under the top coaches of baseball from US. The coaching camp is organised for the selected coaches from Asia and Dilip Naik is the only coach selected from India to underdog the training from February 23 to 28.

GISELLE IS “MPT QUEEN”: Giselle de Souza was crowned “MPT Queen” by Mormugao Municipal Council chairperson Milton Baretto on the occasion of the traditional Mormugao Port Institute Republic Eve Ball. The queen took away a prize worth Rs.25,000 which includes a cash prize, Goa-Mumbai return air ticket, stay at a five-star hotel, a gold ornament and gift hampers.

GOLD MEDAL FOR JEANETTE: Jeanette S Rebello, research scholar in the department of Chemistry at Goa University, has been awarded a gold medal for the best research paper at the Eleventh National Convention of Electrochemists held in Tiruchirapalli. She presented a paper titled “Enhanced Anodic Activity of FE (III)—OMS-2 for use in direct methanol fuel cells”.

PHD TO CANACONA LECTURER: Geography lecturer of Dnyan Prabodhini Mandal’s Shree Mallikarjun College of Arts & Commerce, Canacona, FM Nadaf, has been awarded PhD degree in Geography for his research work entitled “Environmental Degradation along the Coastal Belt of Goa: A Spatial Analysis”, by the vice chancellor of Karnataka University, Dharwad. His work makes an in-depth analysis of ecologically sensitive issues and proposes measures for the environmental reconstruction of Coastal Goa.

VALERIAN PINTO PASSES AWAY: Noted Konkani writer-director and actor Valerian Pinto, popularly known as Pintham Derebail on the Mangalorean stage, passed away on February 18, after a brief illness.

GOAN ENTERS US CUSTOMS: Edgar Furtado, a native of Panjim, was among the first US Customs and Border Protection Officers to successfully complete an integrated training module by US Customs and Border Protection Academy at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centre in Glynco, Georgia. Forty-four students from across the United States, who began their training on October 29, 2003, successfully graduated and completed the course on January 30, 2004.

GOAN HEADS BAHRAIN MEET: The International Agencies Co Ltd, Bahrain, hosted a seminar on “Occupational Health—New Challenges” which was being conducted by Dr Vallabh B Dhaimodker, one of the leading occupational health consultants from Goa at the crown Plaza Hotel, Bahrain, recently. Dr Dhaimodker is an accomplished occupational health specialist and consultant for various industries, with over 15 years of experience. Dr Dhaimodker is also a certified expert, authorised by TUV Sudedeutschland, Germany.

AWARD FOR MAPUSA TEACHER: The Department Teacher Education and Extension of the National Council of Educational Research and Training, Delhi, organised an all-India competition on innovative methods of teaching Hindi to non-Hindi speaking students, recently. Mrs Eleena R D’Souza of St Mary’s Convent High School, Mapusa, submitted her research paper project on teaching the basic in Hindi grammar in an innovative way, for which she has been given a national award.

A DREAM COME TRUE FOR BENJAMIN: Benjamin D’Silva’s life became the third Goan and first in the villages of Assolna, Velim and Cuncolim to become Federation international Football association assistant referee.

DR RAJADHYAKSHA'S DEMISE: Leading city-based ophthalmologist Dr RV Rajadhyaksha passed away following a massive heart attack at his Porvorim residence on February 19 morning. Dr Rajadhyaksha was associated with several socio-cultural activities in the last many decades.

PRESIDENT’S POLICE MEDAL: Joe F D’Souza, Deputy Inspector General of Police, CRPF, Bangalore, has been awarded the President’s Police Medal for distinguished service on Republic Day. He is also the recipient of the police medal for meritorious service awarded in 1997 and CRPF Director General’s Commendation Disc in 1996. Joe is the son of Sebastian and Bertha D’souza of Muddavaddo-Saligao.

PHD FOR SUZETTE: Maria Suzette Francisca Fernandes Dias was conferred a doctorate in French at the recently held Goa University convocation ceremony. She completed her doctoral thesis entitled “La conscience post-coloniale: Une etude compare des oeuvres de Rushdie et de Ben Jelloun” under the guidance of late Prof KJ Mahale and Dr Kiran Budkuley. Suzette is presently employed by the Centre for Cross-Cultural Research at the Australian National University in Canberra and works for cultural anthropologist, Prof Howard Morphy.

COLACO TOPS MBA EXAM: Ms Ruhee Colaco has been awarded a Gold Medal for standing first at the Master of Business Administration examination held at Goa University in April 2003. Ms Colaco is a resident of Sasmolem-Baina. She received the medal at the hands of Governor of Goa and Vice Chancellor of Goa University, Mr Kidar Nath Sahani, at the 16th Annual Convocation held at Kala Academy, Panaji, on February 14.
